Symbol of generosity, sharing, and Christ.
Bread is one of the most important symbols in Christianity. It is a symbol of generosity and sharing. Bread is the symbol of life and Christ in the Christian religion. When used with wine it represents the Last Supper or communion. This was the last gathering of Jesus and his disciples before Jesus was crucified.
Bread also represents life. When the Israelites were in the desert, God kept them sustained with manna, which translates to the bread of heaven.
During the Last Supper, Jesus took the bread and broke it saying “This is my body . . .”. This use of bread continues today in Christianity with Holy Communion along with wine which represents his blood. This is a time of self-reflection for Christians.
Bread is also mentioned in the Lord’s Prayer. “Give us this day our daily bread.” This refers to actual and spiritual nourishment. Jesus also said he was the bread of life. He provided spiritual nourishment.
Bread became a sign of sharing when Jesus used it in the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Jesus had attracted a multitude of followers and he needed to feed them. There were only five loaves of bread and two fishes, but Jesus managed to feed the multitude. The bread also represents the Word of God used to nourish the crowd.
Today, bread is used in these ways in the Christian church and its teachings.
